Apple Criticized for Not Being Green Enough
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac

Dell also gets some flak, while HP invests in recycling and good PR.

While Apple has operated a computer recycling program for some years, the company's
detractors say it has not gone far enough, according to a story in the Mercury News.

Cupertino's critics argue that the company has only recently offered a take-back
program, and has not publicized it widely. However, Apple does offer recycling to its
business and education customers, in Europe and Japan, as well as the US.

The story focuses on HP's recycling efforts, which include a $44 million dollar
shredder which crunches PCs to extract and separate leaded glass, aluminum, steel and
plastic.

HP charges $10-13 to pick up any brand of computer from your doorstep. Dell also
offers an online option of auctioning or recycling your old PC. However, the story
says Dell has also come in from criticism due to its subcontracting of a federal
prison program to cater for its recycling demands.

Analysis: Apple being one of the smaller PC manufacturers probably doesn't attract as
much attention to its recycling efforts as Dell, HP and Co. Some of the worst
environmental problems include PCs as landfill in the CHinese mainland, which
themselves represent a toxic disaster.

You've got to wonder whether a far lower percentage of Macs are recycled though; given
how many Mac users 'recycle' them themselves, Unlike 286s and 386s, tens of thousands
of SE/30s, Classics, LCs and Pluses are still chugging away, instead of contributing
to toxic waste.
