All Signs Point to eMac Refresh
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
November 28th 2002

Promos may mean Apple is looking to subtlely clear its inventory.

This is purely speculative, but Apple's recent promos and price reductions on the
eMac appear to point to an eMac refresh soon.

Apart from the usual suspects (price discounts), there's not a lot of evidence for
this kind of rumor-mongering: eMac deliveries at the AppleStore are still only 1-2
days, so stock appears plentiful.

But Apple's relatively poor sales figures for eMac in Q4 suggests the line needs a
push to get its educaiton sales moving, the market it was designed for. The sales
number also suggest that consumers, despite their initial enthusiasm for the cheap,
consumer G4, have not embraced it as wholeheartedly as Apple initially assumed.

The DVD-R iMac was released to make the SuperDrive a relatively inexpensive option for
consumers, but it's hard to tell how taken customers have been by this. More have been
drawn to the 17" DVD-R iMac, which suggests price isn't necessarily a factor for those
chasing a SuperDrive Mac.

But Apple may be clearing out a big backlog of inventory in preparation for a new
model which may be announced during, or soon after, MWSF in January.

I still think eMac is a great budget Mac: G4, big screen, SuperDrive if you want it
and all the other usual Mac bells and whistles (FireWire, 100bT, plus a pile of
software). But it sounds like people aren't willing to put up with mere CRTs anymore,
whwn iMacs (which, let's face it, look much cooler) don't cost a great deal more - at
least for the more SuperDrive-challenged models. Speed probably isn't the eMac's
problem - maybe it needs a design rethink to wow prospective buyers.
