Rumor: Apple to Add Major New Channels to Sherlock
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
December 4th 2002
Search app gains tracking, Google integration.
ThinkSecret is reporting that Apple will soon add package tracking, White Pages, and
Google search to its Sherlock 3 web search utility.
According to the story, Apple has seeded a pre-release build to idenfity bugs, and the
company has set MWSF in January as the deadline. Sources do not reveal whether the
updated Sherlock will be rolled in a 10.2.3 or 10.2.4 release, or as a individual
download.
Parcel tracking was included in the beta of OS X 10.2, according to ThinkSecret, but
was pulled.
The added features to Sherlock were apparently posted by mistake to one of Apple's
public bulletin board for Sherlock developers.
Analysis: These would be excellent feature upgrade for Sherlock; package tracking is a
particularly compelling thing to have on the desktop. Google integration is perhaps
not unexpected, and merely represents the search engine's dominance.
As ThinkSecret notes, these features are already available in the Karelia Software's
Watson application. It's a little sad to see the Big Apple 'borrowing' their ideas
from the little guys. Very Microsoft, in fact.
