12 Days of X-Mas: Apple Pro Speakers
By Michael Flaminio, Insanely Great Mac
December 4th 2002

Looking for a little something extra for iTunes listening?

The options for add-on speakers are plentiful, but I choose Apple's Pro Speakers for a
number of reasons. Perhaps at the top is the price, at $59 from The Apple Store, they
fit within our under $100 range. The speakers deliver 10 watts of sound, but also
digital sound. The speakers connect to Macs via Apple's digital audio output, offering
supposidely better quality sound. As a bonus, the speakers work with the Harmon Kardon
iSub, which for an another $59 (Apple Store, instant rebate) you can add a 20 watt sub
woofer. The iSub works in conjunction with the speakers, meaning all low frequencies
are diverted from the Pro Speakers to the iSub. Finally, the last features is that the
Apple Pro Speakers are a stylish addition to any desktop.

I enjoy using the Pro Speakers, especially with OS X and iTunes. I can listen to MP3s
all day long in the background, and unlike under OS 9, the MP3 playing does not
interfere with what I'm working on in the foreground and visa versa. If you work in
front of your computer all day long, this alone may be a reason to switch over to OS
X, but you need to make sure you got some good speakers first!

If you plan on buying both the Pro Speakers and iSub, there are many other options
available in that $160 range. For example Klipsch has refurbished ProMedia 4.1
speakers for $149.99, which is an excellent deal with four 60 watt speakers and a 160
watt woofer. The advantage of the Apple Pro Speakers is that they offer great sound at
a reasonable price with the option to expand with an iSub later on, if desired.
