Smart Toolkit: FWB's latest widget
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
December 6th 2002
Protect data from hard-drive failures with advanced diagnostics
FWB has introduced its latest hard-disk management app -- Smart Toolkit 1.0. Using the
Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (yup, that spells smart) built into
most modern ATA hard drives, Smart Toolkit monitors the internal performance of the
motors, media, heads and the overall reliability of the drive. It will check monitored
drives every five minutes for incipient problems and provides regular reports on what
it finds.
When a potential problem is detected, Smart Toolkit will alert the user onscreen, with
sound, email or by updating a webpage, allowing the otherwise hapless user to back-up
before disaster strikes.
FWB Smart Toolkit sells for $34.95 and a downloadable demo is available here.
Editor's note: Though I've experienced only one failed drive in the 10-plus years I've
owned Macs (about 10 different models), I think this utility is a must have. In fact,
I would think that this functionality is something that Apple should seriously
consider including in the operating system.
