Build your own Mac compatible
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
December 20th 2002
Yes, you can create a computer from parts that will run X, Classic and Linux
TechTV is running a story, and a video report throughout the day, about how one goes
about building a Mac-compatible computer from readily available parts. Though you
won't be able to buy the necessary widgets new from Apple, a host of vendors do
specialize in refurbished Mac components.
TechTV pieced their Mac compatible together with parts from Sonnet, MacResQ (logic
board), eBay (power supply), ATI (video card) and Western Digital (HDD), as well as
RAM from Crucial. Oddly, the report doesn't mention where they got a compatible case,
though it probably came "bundled" with the MacResQ mobo.
A similar "Hot to build your Mac" story is also currently running on MacOpz
Editor's note: Apple really needs to recognize the importance of the hobbyist
component of the computer biz. There are literally millions of people who like nothing
better than building their computers, both because of the challenge and the relatively
low cost.
A BYO "Mac Kit" that includes the OS and a motherboard would file this niche very
nicely, and would probably sell very well -- even with a 31-percent mark up.
It is also worth noting that TechTV doesn't mention where it bought a copy of the OS
or what OS they chose to run.
