MWSF: Let the Rumors Begin
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
December 22nd 2002

The grapevine's looking pretty barren right now, but things will hot up in the New
Year - guaranteed.

When Steve Jobs takes the stage at MacWorld San Francisco on January 6, it's a pretty
sure thing you won't have read the complete preview on January 5 courtesy of Time
Canada.

Forbes is making a number of predictions: that Apple is working on a web browser;
videoconferencing with iChat; and tracking with Sherlock [old news, almost]. You can
add an iPhoto update with CD burning support, and Final Cut Pro 4 to that list,
courtesy of ThinkSecret.

On the hardware front, things are more uncertain. Forbes thinks iMac and eMac will get
speed bumps. But apart from, maybe, a 1GHz iMac, this is incremental stuff and hardly
likely to set the pulse racing.

As Apple acknowledged in its recent SEC 10-K filing, Power Mac sales are very flat and
'mere' speed bumps aren't having the desired effect. Nor has the move to the mirrored
drive doors chassis pushed many people onto Power Mac. But whether Apple will up-clock
the PM this time around is anyone's guess.

BlueTooth is a better bet. The general consensus seems to be that the time is ripe to
integrate BlueTooth, Airport-style, into all shipping Macs.

The big question mark is whether that long-rimored 19" LCD will debut on the high-end
iMac. My bet is a four-model line-up, with a 19" up top, two 17-inchers in the middle,
and a bargain-basement 15" model down below.

The good ship Apple hasn't been leaking much of late. The lawsuit against Jose Lopez
must account for the lack of info at ThinkSecret, SpyMac and MacRumors.

No news of press pass refusals yet, but we'll keep an eye on that one.

And, just to make sure you're in the know, make sure you click on over to Time Canada,
sometime after midnight on January 6 - just to make sure you're not missing out on
anything.
