Don't Trash Your Mac!
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
December 30th 2002

Recycle, Refurb, Reuse.

Why are used Macs so popular? Because they're easy to recycle.

That's the message Apple Pi is getting out, a Washington group dealing in 'rebirthing'
Macs only. A Washington Post story looks at Mac and PC recycling, and reports how they
end up in schools, churches and (some of them) overseas.

It's not just Macs that Apple Pi deals with, of course. Printers, monitors and other
peripherals also make their way to charitable organizations and whoever can use them.

Apple Pi frequently dismantles the Macs into components - a hard drive here, a floppy
drive there. Lorin Evans of Apple Pi, quoted in the Post story, says "The beauty of
the Mac is it's easy to triage,"

If you're in the DC area, you can deliver your old Macs personally to Apple Pi at
12022 Parklawn Dr., Rockville, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. Or check their website.

Alternatively, if you have a 2.4GHz PC you can't stand, the PC recycling equivalent,
ReBoot, also have a website with more info about ridding yourself of an x86 box.

Analysis: I've got to confess I put 9 Macs out for garbage collection before Xmas (2 x
IIsi, 1 x IIci, a few LCs, a IIvx and a Quadra 700) and they all...went. They were
scavenged within hours. None had hard drives, RAM [okay, a couple of 1MB 30-pin
SIMMs], floppies, PRAM batteries or, in all cases, even power supplies. Two complete
486s went untouched. Hm...
