The End of MacWorld As We Know It?
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
December 30th 2002

IDG-Apple stalemate shows no sign of a breakthrough. Will this be the last MacWorld?

What will be the fate of MacWorld? Will January's San Francisco be the last 'official'
show?

That's the question a Wired article poses. MacWorld Tokyo was cancelled without much
fanfare recenrly as Cupertino withdrew, while Apple has refused to confirm whether it
will attend the 2003 summer expo in Boston, where IDG, the promoters of MacWorld, has
signed a three-year contract.

MacWorld New York will go ahead in July 2003, but it may be the last. Wired speculates
that Apple may be planning a number of smaller, regional shows to counteract the
considerable expense associated with the four major expos that have traditionally been
held in recent years.

Major hardware and software releases are always keenly anticipated at the expos. Wired
argues that Apple could also avoid the pressing deadlines and big expectations that
the major trade shows always produce.

Veteran Apple commentator, TidBits publisher Adam C. Engst, thinks this might be the
last time - so make the most of it.

Apple's spat with IDG, which is also the publisher of MacWorld, dates back to October
17, when IDG announced they would return to Boston for MacWorld, where the show was
last staged in 1997. Apple immediately replied they would not attend Boston.
