Here's a story with legs...
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
December 30th 2002
A wire service write up that epitomizes the mainstream press' misconceptions about the
Mac and Apple
The always colorful Taipei Times is carrying a DPA (Deutsche Presse-Agentur, a German
wire service akin to AP) story that could serve as a textbook example for how not to
write a story about Apple and the Mac.
"As personal computers go, Apple's Macintosh line makes up a tiny portion of the
market," the article begins tellingly. "Yet somehow [emphasis added] these computers
have drawn a lot of attention, perhaps because of Apple's aggressive and effective
marketing campaigns."
Before you go marching off to DPA's website to fashion vituperation into an electronic
slings and arrows, you should go armed with the available ammunition:
"...people hear the name and think computers that serve a specialized professional
market, such as graphic designers."
"...Mac is a synonym for a colourful appliance [ie not even a computer] named iMac."
"...desktop versions of the Mac line use a G4 processor, the iMac still uses a
slower G3 chip."
As a final incentive to direct your invective at the DPA for this fine example of
journalistic excellence, I offer the agency's motto:
"dpa stands for independent, reliable, up-to-date and comprehensive worldwide news --
24 hours a day, 365 days a year."
Editor's note: There's absolutely no reason whatsoever to use invective or otherwise
behave rudely should you choose to write the DPA. The Mac is a choice that 95 percent
of the civilized world has chosen to ignore. And, with numbers like that, you're bound
to get more than a little ignorance. Rise above...
