Macworld UK: Apple shifts iMac, eMac orders

Korea's LG loses as Hon Hai gains as the mothership realigns production

Macworld UK is reporting that Hon Hai Precision, which is better known in the West as
Foxconn, has displaced LG Electronics as a supplier of Apple's iMac and eMac desktop
machines.

LG Electronics recently announced their decision to focus on higher profit-margin
laptop computers, according to Macworld UK.

"Apple's orders have been minimal," an LG spokesman is quoted as saying, "and we want
to better serve our major notebook computer buyers such as IBM and Hewlett-Packard."

Hon Hai apparently will pick up the Korea maker's share of an estimated one million
unit shipments in 2003.

True to form, a Hon Hai spokesman told Macworld, "We do not comment on
contract-related reports. We will not confirm or deny the report. "

Apple officials reported to be unavailable for comment, which is also in character for
players at the mothership.

Editor's note: Like their counterparts in Taiwan, Korean manufactured PC have become
less competitive in recent years. However, the Taiwanese have been able to quickly
relocate a broad range of productive activities to China because of the shared
language(s) and cultural affinities between the two nations. Therefore, Hon Hai, which
is still based in Taiwan, pads its Apple accounts while LG "decides" to focus on
notebooks.
