Rumor: Apple to charge for iApps?
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
January 3rd 2003

Users may be paying for new versions of iDVD, iPhoto and iMovie

News.com reports that Apple will announce a plan next week to charge for iDVD, iPhoto
and iMovie, which will be sold together as a bundle. To date, these apps have been
free but the mothership is reportedly looking to charge up to $50 for the trio.

"Windows users are not making the switch as Apple had hoped, and now the company is
pulling a Microsoft-like move by bundling popular applications and pasting a 'premium'
price tag to them," analyst Tim Deal, Technology Business Research, told News.com

Apples other iApps, iTunes, iCal and iSync, apparently will remain "free."

News.com was able to reach a Apple representative for comment, but he/she invoked the
company's traditional cloak of silence.

The digital daily correctly notes that user reaction to plan could be harsh.

"I think there will be the usual outrage," analyst Roger Kay, IDC, is quoted as
saying. "No one ever likes to pay for stuff they used to get for free."

Editor's note: If the grapevine's prognostications turn out to be true (ie nothing
truly new or exciting is unveiled next Tuesday), then announcing pay-to-play iApps
will enrage the faithful, which are already testy and agitated over similar recent
moves. The .Mac and Jaguar upgrade pricing fiascos are still too fresh in peoples'
minds to go back to the well this soon.
