3-5 Day Wait on Airport Base Stations at AppleStore: 802.11g Ready to Roll?
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
January 5th 2003

Stand by for the big MWSF wi-fi announcement.

The AppleStore online has Airport Base Stations and Airport cards now on a 3-5 day
wait, instead of the usual 1-2 days.

Delays such as this usually indicate model updates are waiting in the wings, which
tends to validate ThinkSecret's prediction that 54Mb/ps Airport - the 802.11g standard
- is ready to rock and roll.

Apple's implementation of 802.11b in the current iteration of Airport limits bandwidth
to 11Mb/ps and 50 users. 802.11g can theoretically achieve maximum throughput of
54-55Mb/ps, although competing standards within the 802.11g guidelines themselves mean
that performance will depend upon which mode a manufacturer adopts. Four protocols
exists within the standard; one will deliver 22Mb/ps; one 33Mb/ps; and yet another
mode offers up to 55Mb/ps.

While in reality Airport may not deliver these types of speeds except under optimum
conditions, consumers should nevertheless see significant improvements with 902.11g
devices.

Analysis: Our bet is that Apple will deliver Airport II at the same price as Airport I
($99 for the card and $299 for the Base Station). That will ensure widespread adoption
of the newer standard and a jump on competitors.

Would Airport II push Mac portable and desktop sales? Yes, if not to the extent that
made the original Airport such a big hit on the first iBooks in 1999. Early adopters
will rush in and others will upgrade. The good news is backwards-compatibility with
802.11b, so schools and homes that upgrade piecemeal won't be left out in the cold.
