What's the Big Hold-Up with PowerBooks?
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
January 5th 2003
Eye on the Ti.
While PowerBook updates or an entirely new model are no expected at MWSF this week,
the delay at the AppleStore, which quotes 3-5 waits on all PowerBook models, appears
odd.
Delays in component deliveries - specifically, the slot-loading DVD-R drive in the
$2,999 1HGz model - might be anticipated.
But a 3-5 day wait on the 867MHz Combo drive model - which is essentially the same as
its 800MHz predecessor, CPU and video card aside - is inexplicable.
Granted, these PowerBooks have been more popular than the previous models, but there
appear to be plenty of stock on dealer shelves.
The recent PowerBook revamp did not involve extensive re-engineering; the graphics
chipset, CPU and DVD-R did not require retooling. Indeed, the DVD-R drive, were it
available as a standalone component, could be retrofitted to the 667 and 800MHz
PowerBook G4s.
ThinkSecret predicts - and they are usually accurate - that Apple will not refresh
either PowerBook or iBook lines, but the wait makes us wonder.
That, along with the fact that the TiBook is now the longest-running PowerBook model,
at two years this week, suggests it might be overdue for replacement, as the refresh
cycle may have run its course.
All, of course, will be revealed this week, but it may be worth your while keeping one
eye open during the keynote to see whether the late-2002 refresh was indeed the Ti's
last hurrah.
