ZDNet: Linux will overtake the Mac (soon)
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
January 6th 2003
Linux is coming, Linux is coming, Linux is... oh never mind
ZDNet is running a story that claims Linux will overtake the Mac OS in terms of market
share within a year or so. The author, Matthew Broersma, quotes an IDC report as
evidence that his prediction holds water.
"The good news for Linux as an operating system for the desktop--as opposed to the
server--is that it is set to become No. 2 after Windows in the next year or so,"
posits Broersma. "The bad news is that its growth does not look to be as explosive as
some advocates might have hoped."
If this growth is as explosive as previous predictions of Linux desktop ascendancy,
then we may actually have to wait until the next millennium for it to overtake the Mac
OS.
The ICD/ZDNet prediction appears to be based in part on the notion that 2003 will see
the return of business IT spending, which is a tenuous proposition. Though many
businesses apparently are hurting for new hardware, software and services -- again,
according to analysts -- it's something of stretch to expect a rebound this year given
flaccid business investment and the specter of war looming nearby.
Then again, who cares?
Even if Linux "surpasses" the Mac OS in terms of market share, I doubt the sky will
fall. I doubt even more strongly that I'll switch to anything other than a newer Mac
in spite of the chorus of nay saying that will surely rise up (The Mac is dead!).
Like my favorite computer, I've been dead before and it's not nearly as bad as people
say. Moreover, it's a lot easier to rise up than the nattering nabobs of negativity
can imagine.
So, if the Linux becomes the No. 2 desktop operating system, will that be enough to
make you "switch?"
