Apple introduces 17-inch PowerBook G4

Apple added a new higher-end PowerBook to its laptop lineup.
The new PowerBook G4 17-inch features a new 17-inch wide-screen format laptop. The
PowerBook ships with a 1 GHz G4 processor and measures 1-inch thin. The 17-inch
PowerBook G4 adds new technologies, including built-in Bluetooth, 54 Mbps 802.11g
Airport wireless Ethernet, FireWire 800 and NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go graphics
accelerator. The 17-inch PowerBook G4 also adds DDR memory and a lighted keyboard with
light sensing brightness.
"Apple's taking another giant leap beyond PC notebooks with the world's first 17-inch
notebook, miraculously engineered into an ultra-light aluminum alloy enclosure that's
only 1-inch thin," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Many users are going to wonder why
they even need a desktop computer anymore."
The new 17-inch PowerBook G4 is expected to ship in February for $3299. The 17-inch
PowerBook will be the first of Apple's hardware that will only boot into Mac OS X,
with OS 9 still available through Classic.
