FireWire 800 Delivers Hard Drives up to 500GB
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
January 7th 2003

Apple's incorporation of FireWire II into the new 17" PowerBook presages a slew of
800Mb/ps FireWire products to come.

Apple's relatively quiet release of FireWire 800, the next-generation IEEE-1394b
specification, resulted in press announcements from Maxtor and La Cie. Maxtor has a
200GB FireWire 800 drive, while La Cie will ship new FireWire 800 desktop drives
ranging from 200 to 500GB in capacity.

The 1394 Trade Association, comprising FireWire backers such as La Cie, Texas
Instruments, Mitsubishi Electronics, Maxtor and Apple, welcomed Apple's integration of
FireWire 800 into its new 17" PowerBook G4.

SmartDisk prematurely sent out a release for its FireWire 800 drives on Monday
morning, and has since re-announced their new FirePower hard drive, which is available
in a 200GB 3.5" package.

FireWire 800 bridgeboards include the new Oxford 922 from Oxford Semiconductor, which
shipped its first boards to La Cie in October 2002.

At present, Apple has only incorporated FireWire 800 on its high-end 17" PowerBook
G4, but all Mac models can be expected to get FireWire 800 ports at their next refresh.

FireWire 800 offers several advantages; greater bandwidth to perform more tasks
simultaneously, particularly with multiple drives; substantially increased
performance, resulting in faster backup of very large files; and
backward-compatibility with FireWire 400.

In 2002, Apple also released its IP-over-FireWire Preview, which enables FireWire
networking using any IP protocol. Ultimately, FireWire can support up to 3.2GB data
transfers over copper wire.
