FireWire 800 v. FireWire 400: 1394b Delivers

FireWire II the big winner with speedy reading and file copying.
Bare Feats has published the first real-world tests of the new FireWire 800 .
Rob Art Morgan's tests have found that a FireWire 800 PCI card and an Oxford 922
bridge board in a Power Mac was "significantly faster" than the original FireWire 400
standard.
The tests utilized an IBM 180GXP hard drive (ATA-6); and a WiebeTech FireWire 400 PCI
card for comparative purposes.
FireWire 800 sustained read speeds came in at 52MB/ps, versus 35MB/ps with the Power
Mac's built-in FireWire 400 ports. Random reads were also significantly faster.
However, sustained writes and sustained writes with FireWire 800 came in only 1-2 MB
ahead of FW 400. Finder file duplication was around 30% faster.
Rob Art Morgan puts down the inconsequential write speed improvements to the
limitations of the ATA-133 bus, although there may be varations in the performance of
FireWire 800 controllers themselves. Bare Feats is waiting to test 800 on the new
PowerBook G4/17", the only Mac model with FireWire 800 available.
