Dell Defeated: HP Reclaims # 1 Spot
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
January 17th 2003
Industry weathers a tough year, with light at the end of the tunnel.
The merged MP-Compaq reclaimed the # 1 crown in the PC industry during the fourth
quarter of 2002, beating out arch-rival Dell.
PC shipments rose by 4% worldwide in the quarter, according to a story at ZDNet, while
2002 shipments increased 1.5% on the previous year, according to IDC figures.
Conversely, the Garner Group said that figures were higher, with 2.7% worldwide growth
and US shipments up by 4.4%.
HP moved 120,000 more CPU units than Dell for the quarter, due primarily to price
cutting and the strength of consumer spending.
Nevertheless, Dell's unit growth was much higher than HP's; Dell shipments increased
by 24.2%, for an overall marketshare of 15.7%. Meanwhile, HP's worldwide shipments
slipped by 9.8%, while marketshare fell to 16.1%.
Dell continued to lead in US marketshare, with 29.2%, with HP's sales contracting,
leaving it with 20.8%.
Gateway is down and almost out, with a shipments decline of 15.7% for the year and
marketshare of 5.7%.
Apple is 5th, with 2.9%, behind IBM.
Analysis: In light of Apple's Q1 2003 results, there are several interesting points
here. First, that the December quarter was perhaps not as flat as CFO Fred Anderson
intimated in his conference call.
Second, the disparity between the IDC and Gartner figures is considerable, with the
latter presenting a far more optimistic outlook.
Third, Gartner's 4.4% growth rate for US shipments (annualized): for the quarter,
Apple's US shipments were up by over 16% (or over 21%, if you discount education).
Averaged out over 4 quarters, that would be around 4 or %, which means Apple is
growing its US shipments by at least the industry average [I know this is a very rough
calculation, but the US growth figures for Apple 2002 aren't to hand right now].
Fourth, forget Gateway, despite their third placing. Unless you've got 10% of the
Wintel industry, you can forget it. It's all cut-cut-cut and dirty and bloody price
wars. HP can afford to play that game, fattened by its imaging and server divisions.
Gateway can't. Apple may have only 2.9%, but look at those fat margins and that
treasure trove of cash.
