Apple, MS, Dell v. Hollywood
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
January 24th 2003
The digital rights war just got ugly.
Apple Computer, Microsoft, Dell Computer, Cisco Systems, Hewlett-Packard and Intel,
among others, confirmed Thursday they have formed a coalition in opposition to
proposed federal legislation which would permit the United States government to put in
place anti-piracy measures applicable to PCs.
The Hollings bill, which has yet to be formally introduced before Congress, would be
likely to force PC and consumer electronics manufacturers and software developers to
integrate anti-copying measures into devices.
Hollywood Studios, in the form of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA),
whose members incliude Sony Pictures, are finding a lot of common ground with groups
such as the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA). The MPAA President, Jack
Valenti, has accused Apple, MS & Co., of "warmongering" He denied the MPAA were "at
war" with the IT industry.
The Hollings bill is known as the Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion
Act (CBDTPA). Digital device manufacturers would need to include copy-protection
mechanisms in accordance with guidelines formulated by the FCC.
