Where in the World is the Power Mac G4 Server?

The old Power Mac Server may be disappearing from the rack.
A quick trip to Apple's hardware page and the Apple Store reveals no desktop G4 Server
in sight.
With Monday's Power Mac revamp to 1.42 GHz, the Servers are usually quierly updated a
few days later. But now, the link at Apple's hardware page simply redirects you to the
Apple Store page for the Power Mac G4.
With the success of XServe - sales of servers have risen by 350% in the most recent
quarter - it was perhaps inevitable that the G4 Server would take a back seat, despite
its small, but loyal following.
UltraSCSI adapters are available for the standard G4 at $49, but no BTO SCSI drives
are available from the Apple Store option list; SCSI drives are usually preferred and
almost mandatory for Servers. However, ATA drives offer most of the performance
nowadays, at a fraction of the cost, for regular applicatons. Apple went with ATA in
their rack-mount XServe party due to cost considerations, but also because ATA had
improved to the point where SCSI performance improvements were marginal.
Purists will doubtless disagree, but we wonder what proportion of desktop Power Mac G4
Servers were sold equipped with SCSI drives, given the lower capacity/higher price
tag.equation. With four 180GB ATA drives available as an option on the standard Power
Macs, the average Server buyer is unlikely to complain about space or performance.
It's possibly a sign that Apple are beginning to rationalize parts of their hardware
line in an effort to reduce inventories of slow-selling products. The disappearance of
the CDRW-only and DVD-only iBooks over time are other examples. With the Power Mac
G4s, you can still add the 10-client OS X Server license for $499 or the unlimited
client license for $999.
