Rumor: The iPod is EOL, long live the iPod
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
February 17th 2003

Citing nothing in particular, Nick dePlume gives legs to iPod update zeitgeist

Think Secret, the Mac grapevine's site of record, is stating that refreshed iPods
should appear within a month. Although Nick doesn't cite anything more specific than a
distinct lack of product in the channel and the current Mac community zeitgeist
begging for an update.

"Supplies of iPods have become increasingly scarce in the retail channel, with the
current models clearly having reached 'end of life' [EOL] status," states Mssr
dePlume. "While the iPod supply shortage in January was commonly attributed to
greater-than-expected holiday sales, the dearth of iPods now supports what we are
hearing from sources about new units."

Last year saw expansion of the line and Nick intones that the "new" iPods this year's
models will sport beefier capacities -- 20, 30 and 40 GB, without any real if any
changes to the form factor or features.

Mssr dePlume states that burnished models could appear as early as this week, today
even.

None of this prognostication is backed by even Nick's regularly quoted "unnamed
sources." However, with the mothership's product burnished, repriced and shipping in
volume and an iPod update nine months in the making, an iPod update is almost assured.

What's your take? Is Apple prepping iPod with "phatter" drives? Or, are Nick, IGM and
"the rest of us" just trying to wish new iPods into existence?
