Sanyo, Apple partnership to yield iMac audio widget?
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

An external amplifier is said to be under development by the two companies and its
arrival is quoted as "soon"
Dow Jones is carrying the story of Shoichi Ishida who runs what amounts to a
"hot-house product development team" for Sanyo Electronic of Japan.
Ishida worked at Sony for 15 years where he helped develop such market hits as the
Walkman and Diskman. Now at Sanyo, he specializes in matching technologies with
third-party products and manufacturers.
"If two companies have some interesting technologies that can be combined, then why
not stick them together?" Ishida asked Dow Jones.
For example, when Apple released its 15-inch LCD iMac in '02, Ishida saw the potential
to improve its sound quality with a Sanyo amplifier, according to Dow Jones.
Ishida and his team developed a custom-made prototype amplifier for the iMac and
showed to Apple, which reportedly liked it so much that a peripheral product based
thereupon "will come to market soon."
The report doesn't elaborate further.
Editor's note: What the iMac and, frankly, other Macs need is a low-cost audio
widget/interface that provides 5.1 digital (SPDIF) ports, as well as traditional audio
I/O up front and ready to use as opposed to the Mac's back panel connectors. Tossing
in USB and FireWire ports for an all-in-one I/O module couldn't hurt...
What do you think Sanyo and Apple are up to? "Just" an amplifier or will it be
something more? An iPod base station perhaps?
