Netscape is Dead, Long Live Gecko?
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
February 19th 2003

In the wake of massive AOL-Time Warner losses, has Netscape reached the end of the
line?

Will Netscape 7 be the last version of the venerable browser, to be supplanted by
Gecko? That's the question that Mozilla News raises.

Netscape 7 has racked up impressive stats, a far cry from its unlamented predecessor,
Netscape 6. According to the article, the browser has recorded over 14 million
downloads, versus AOL's 10 million downloads for version 8.

While it's unclear whether the new Mozilla-driven version of Netscape will emerge
(i.e., Netscape 8), or whether version 7 will simply get maintenance updates (a
'feature' of Netscape 4). Mozilla News reports "brutal" cutbacks in AOL's Netscape
division though, with the deepest cuts coming last December.

Gecko, the engine which drives Netscape, has a brighter future, however. It's already
on OS X and is expected to be incorporated into a Windows AOL client, although not for
at least 12 months. For Steve Case at AOL-TW, Gecko is "the future".
