Japan Watch: 1GHz iMac, DP Power Mac, PowerBook G4-12 Make Strong Debuts
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac

iBook, eMac also deliver healthy sales performances.

The new 1Ghz iMac, the mid-range DP 1.25GHz and the Mini-Me 12.1" PowerBook G4s have
made healthy inroads into the Japanese desktop and portable markets in their first
weeks on the market.

The not-inexpensive 1GHz iMac, equipped with the 17" LCD, is ranked at an impressive #
5 in Japanese desktop sales. The price-leading eMac 700 Combo, now retailing in the US
for $999, is at # 9, followed by the DP 1.25GHz Power Mac G4 at # 10. Apple's fourth
desktop entry is the SuperDrive eMac 800 at # 15.

Among portables, Mini-Me ranks at # 12, a strong performance for a notebook which is
strong on features, but not budget priced. The standard Combo version is the preferred
specification. The 800MHz iBook is still selling well, at equal # 14 on the top 20
sales chart, although it's not clear whether this is the 12,1" or 14.1" model
(probably the former).

Apple sales in Japan were down, along with the rest of the industry in the most recent
quarter, although iPod is the best-selling MP3 player in the country.

Analysis: It's pleasing to see some of Apple's premium models are making sales headway
in Japan, where much cheaper local desktops and portables are the order of the day.
It's worthwhile noting that Dell, HP and other US PC brands don't get a look in in
Japan. If only the US market was a carbon copy...
