lsof | grep plist > textfile &
tail -f textfile

and then repeat whatever causes that entry to be made and see if the
terminal sheds any light on the culprit. But it probably isn't

That's a clever idea! Unfortunately on my system, it returns nothing.

I did notice something else:

$ defaults read
2010-04-13 06:13:11.250 defaults[2117:39] Preference plist was NOT a dictionary.
