Greetings.
Can anyone point me towards a description of the relationship
between ipfw and the application firewall on 10.6?
I'm trying to open port 8081, but having more trouble than I expect.
Googling for the obvious things produces a fair amount of voodoo,
which isn't helpful. I think the problem is that packets which get
through the ipfw rules are still trapped by the application firewall
(hence the apparently hopelessly promiscuous 'allow any to any'
default ipfw rule!), but I can find no description of how to tune
that in any way.
The only apple.com description of the application firewall which I
can find is at <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1810>, which doesn't
say much more than that the firewall exists.
I'm guessing that I could get just about what I want by disabling
the application firewall (using the System Preference) and replacing
all its effective rules by hand using ipfw, but that's (a)
errorprone, (b) a lot of work, (c) a bit mad.
What should I be reading?
Thanks for any pointers.
Best wishes,
Norman
