It turns out that in the configuration file for DNS one can specify
a 'offered' search domain and a 'offered' nameserver.

On the mac book pro I did not set these fields and name resolution works and
appears to be using the nameserver on the mini.

Turning on the VPN on my name server evidently 'required' that at least
the offered nameserver field be set, without this field being set name
resolution failed.

Anyway now it all works just fine....
