In my opinion Dan Shoop is a high level troll.

As they say on 'House' "They could build monuments to his ego".

I can only speculate on the size of his ego since I don't know him in real life, and he does come off as abrasive and arrogant. But he also has shown a lot of knowledge and skill. Take the good, take the bad.

When coming to the list I usually don't really socialize, per se...this is more a source of getting help, so as long as the person is offering advice and explanations, even if it is off-putting at times, that's fine with me. As long as it doesn't degrade into personal attacks or just plain stupidity it doesn't really matter.

I don't think he's a troll because he's not soliciting attacks nor is he baiting people into doing more. Dan seems to have a very low tolerance for certain things and where a troll would invite more problems he usually just disappears from the thread when he says he's done. He comes off more like the old guy at Halloween that tosses a few chocolate bars at you and tells you to get the hell off his porch.

At any rate, it's no worse than most of the others out there that get bitchy and short tempered or worse, act like actual trolls when given the veil of anonymity the Internet affords.

In short...if you don't like his style it's not hard to add a filter for his name since he doesn't do anything to hide his identity, and his style is admittedly on the "hey dumbass, do this" side of advice-giving, he usually knows what he's talking about. He just doesn't try using good people skills with the volunteer forum and is shorter on patience :-)

Anyway, I've had groups that pissed me off before, and really...to let an online group of semi-anonymous people get under your skin...I learned I needed to let it go. It's not worth the stress. You get help, or you go somewhere like Serverfault/Superuser to get help instead. These lists aren't usually filled with people who would care if I died of a heart attack tomorrow. Why should I care enough about what they say to let them contribute to my heart attack in the first place?
