What is the best way to copy a deep and large folder hierarchy (that may be a backup of a partition, but not the startup partition), which may contain aliases, symbolic links, and all sort of things (but not e.g. OS devices), from within the TM backup to another location and preserve everything including metadata.
I used Finder to copy it and it appeared to work (no errors, at least) but, of course, it is hard to tell if every bit has been maintained. Other options may be: 1. Unix cp with appropiate options 2. ditto (does that still exist?) 3. Any others? I am not sure if I could use the Time Machine interface itself to copy to an alternate location? If I use Finder should I login to the root account or will an admin account be good enough. I thought about using CCC but it won't copy from TM backups. My biggest concern is the quality of the copy (i.e. not to lose any ifo, aliases, symbolic links, metadata including but also beyond owner, group, permissions etc). Any recommendations and suggestions appreciated.
