OK so in fact the broken aliases are zero length files according to ls -l, but 
they have extended attributes. And xattr -l shows the contents, and both the 
path name and the to-me-indecipherable alias data itself appear to just be 
wrong. The originals still exist, in their original locations EXCEPT for the 
name of the hard drive. Everytime I blow away a drive and restore data, I give 
it a new name. So maybe that has something to do with this problem.
