Thank you, good suggestion.  As I mentioned, I had put the volume(s) in the 
privacy panel of Spotlight, so I was hoping that would discourage mds/Spotlight 
but this will test for sure.

Yes, I've fallen for that one in the past.  Interestingly I also don't have any 
Finder windows open there either but Finder still shows up as accessing the 
Volume.

I've tried restarting Finder.  I also use Total Finder but I quit that for the 
tests too.
