Another good idea, will try.

It seems to be for all volumes, thumb drives, external disks, DVDs (except 
perhaps internal volumes), so I am doubtful it will be something on the volumes 
themselves.

No, only mds and there were some Finder processes on a couple of occasions.

Will consider this.

Again, I find it hard to understand that it's the same problem on all volumes 
but I will try.
