First you connect, then authenticate, start tunnel, and go talk to the DHCP server. You should also be able to set the server side of the vpn mess in debug/verbose mode so you can see the connection as it takes place.
How do you look into it? I like to tail the relevant log file in a window while I try to connect. Can you use something else as the vpn client, like a Mac laptop?
