Maybe lookup the laptop model on MacTracker and see what version it came with. 
If it was less than 10.6.2 then you just might be able to:

- Boot your own (older) Mac off the SL DVD, and install SL to a spare external 
drive.
- Then boot your own (older) Mac off the external drive, and Software Update it 
to the latest versions of SL, using combo updaters if possible. Hopefully this 
will give you a SL system that has all it needs to run the laptop.
- Then try booting the laptop off the external drive, and see if it will boot 
and function.
- If it does, clone the external drive to the laptop. Obviously first do what 
you have to with the data on the laptop to preserve it.


Even if the laptop originally came with 10.6.2, it might still work, but I 
dunno specifics.
