Tried that followed by resetting the PRAM as well. When connected to an 
external monitor, the external monitor wakes up properly after sleep but the 
built-in stays fully black. Also noted that they hardware keys for screen 
brightness do absolutely nothing at all (not even any onscreen UI displays)

Apple confirmed it is a hardware problem and is shipping a replacement.
