For more than a decade, I used to paste a ".pictClipping" graphic
into my Appleworks word processor files (CWWP type).
Worked without ANY problems, also in OSX 10.5.8
The Problem
Now I have bought a new Mini, on which AW still works great, but
with one nasty exception:
I leave the cwwp file for going to the Finder for opening the
clipping and copying the content to the clipboard.
When returning to AW, before I even activate any command, AW
freezes (I have actually to kill it, because it hinders a reboot).
Following the AW freeze, all other apps which are open freeze in
turn one after the other, the Finder at the end. I have to reboot.

Both the symptoms and the crash dump seem to indicate that the
problem is with clipboard processing. What do you use to "open the
clipping and copying the content to the clipboard?" The Finder?
Whatever it is, it seems to be storing some sort of damaged data.
As each application comes forward, it attempts to import the
clipboard with the bad data in it, and malfunctions because of it.
How about dragging the clipping to Preview and copying it to the
clipboard from there?
Ok, I tried to follow your advice. Preview could not open the dragged
file, but when I converted (with Graphic Converter) the clip to a .png
file, preview opened that .png file and I could copy/paste it in
Appleworks. It worked indeed.
However, I also tried to open/copy the clipping with Finder BEFORE I
even open Appleworks. Result: I could not open Appleworks. That
definitely points to a clipboard problem, as you rightly mentioned.
