I use the MailSteward package. I have found it well worth the small money charged. It doesn't just archive, it offers multiple updatable archive files and SQL search functions for each. It uses either MySQL databases or SQLite databases, depending on which version you buy.

What is the best way of archiving older email in Mail?
I have created a new mailbox and moved all the email I want to save into it.
Then what, find it in ~/Library/Mail/ and burn it to a disc?
I am concerned that it may not always import into newer versions of Mail so it can be viewed and searched. Nothing worse than an error message saying the mbox is corrupt and can't be imported. Or could all that email be saved in some other kind of database that could be searched appended, etc. Anyone have any system or method of archiving email so it is still accessible?
