just wanted to mention OfflineIMAP as another way to accomplish something similar; i have not used it yet, but have been following it for a while with the thought that it might serve me well (i use a combination of Thunderbird, Mailplane(gmail) and Mail.app for various reasons, and would potentially use OfflineIMAP as a central respository, though no IMAP solution is perfect for gmail, imo)
