mdimport activity means that Spotlight is busy indexing your files. This is probably a side effect of whatever else is going on. If you want to figure out where your network activity is coming from, I'd suggest that you download some app that allows you to track that, for example Little Snitch. I'd also suggest that you update to the latest version of Mac OS X 10.4 before doing anything else.
