based on your Finder view preferences, you are a fringe user; Apple doesn't support fringe users with high configurability; i wish it did, but it doesn't and that is unlikely to change
consider a trial of Path Finder, which is more configurable and flexible than Finder; i like Path Finder, but i still find plenty in it that annoys me (it has added many features of little use to me while ditching some of my favorites, such as the fantastic combined outline/column view it used to have); i don't use file search much, so i'm not sure how Path Finder will stack up to Finder for the particular concern you have brought up here
