Safari 5.0.1 on OS X runs faster than FireFox 3.6.x here. Opera 10.6.x is 
faster in some things, slower in others. Safari has some problems on Windows, 
but it's still faster than MSIE 8 and comparable to FireFox. Opera runs away 
from it, though. I still use Safari and FireFox on Windows instead of Opera, 
though. Speed isn't everything, and I don't like the way Opera renders some 
sites I go to often.

That may be your problem. Safari loves RAM. I'm currently on a 2.66 GHz iMac, 4 
GB RAM, 10.6.4 in OS X, Vista SP2 in Windows, no problems.
