Whats the main differences between Apple Mail vs. Mozilla Thunderbird?
What are their advantages and disadvantages? Which mail client
performs better (faster)? What are you using?

many of the differences are well illustrated here:

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_e-mail_clients>

i don't know which is faster (it's not an issue for me)

i use both as well as Mailplane (for gmail); i prefer Thunderbird overall, but wish it integrated better with the rest of the OS; i actually use Tbird and Mail with some of the same IMAP accounts - Tbird for everyday reading and Mail for archiving

Mail is more refined, but offers a dumbed down experience (imo); Thunderbird i like particularly for:

* thread handling
* the fact it doesn't mark email read as soon as it's clicked
* its multiple labels
* for how it highlights mailboxes that have received new mail since i last visited
* for some of the navigation commands
* for its general configurability
* the Virtual Identity plugin

Thunderbird crashes & hangs more often than Mail (perhaps because of the plug-in), however i never lose mail
