One of the most annoying things for me is ThunderBird has a delay before a
message is marked read, after it is displayed. Since i tend to scan through
mailing lists ith 100+ new messages a day, I will often blaze through messages
with only a second or two on each one before I move to the next one. Can't do
that in Tbird, none of them will be marked as read.

just checked that behavior -- with the correct preference set (Advanced > Reading & Display > Reading > [x] Automatically mark messages as read > (x) Immediately on display) i can use N (go next unread, immediately mark as read) as fast as i could ever want to; not sure if that is better than in the past since i do not prefer that preference, i prefer to mark as read when i've finished reading or decided i will never read an email, so i usually work into a thread with N (next unread) then at the end of the thread (or midway if i don't find it interesting, or if it's a thread of only one message), T is my friend -- it marks the whole thread read and moves to the next unread

I've had to completely rebuilt TBird's mail index on at least a couple of
occasions and would have lost ALL my email if I wasn't using IMAP.

i haven't rebuilt my database since i started fresh a little over a year ago (i only use IMAP); i do get crashes but they have lately had no effect on my email (a while back a crash would sometimes lose all my labels); crashing and hanging behavior was minimal before i started using Virtual Identity, but it's too good to pass up; Mail often hangs at quit for me too
