Given the plummeting price of hard drives, and the importance of what
you store on them, I never use a drive again if I lose faith in it.
Question, was this one of the new "green" drives? If so, I certainly
think there is a performance issue with them. They run at lower RPMs,
and many models at varying RPMs. If they idle quicker, and park often,
yes, it might be a firmware issue, in that, the drive is going into an
idle mode too often, and if idle = park the heads first, then yes, you
could hear a clicking sound. Why a drive manufacturer would claim
there's no performance issue from a drive that spins slower and sleeps
more often, is odd, assuming that's the drive you have.
