My experience in all such cases (clicking accompanied by system hang) is that the drive is failing and cannot be repaired. Try scanning for bad blocks/sectors using something like techtool, or toss it in a windows system and run chkdsk /r /v (it will need to be formatted as ntfs for this to work). This should tell you for sure. In the old days, bad sectors could be worked around without many worries, but on modern disk drives, even one bad sector is a bad omen. They're like lemmings - when one sector goes over the cliff, many others will follow in short order. If the drive is new enough to be under warranty, get it replaced. I've learned through a handful of annoying experiences not to engage in guesswork when drives start going wonky. -Matt
