It doesn't seem to be due merely to large numbers of open windows in my case.

To test this out, I tried opening thousands of .txt files and it worked fine 
for the most part. No video corruption, though Finder seemed to hang after a 
couple of thousand. I got the impression this was due to some problems with 
resolving aliases, as I was launching them from a Spotlight window, and it 
would have recovered had I let it sit a bit longer.

I'll test with a 32-bit kernel tomorrow and report back.
