The Mac App Store … I dunno, if it works it will be great for the small to 
medium companies out there. They will make a lot more money if they don't have 
to handle their own payment processing, copy-protection, and distribution. 
That's good for everyone. They make more, we save money, and Apple just rolls 
in dough. And for freeware authors it's a no brainer if they're using XCode.

Where's the downside?

i don't know specifically, but there's certainly risk of a downside -- the approval process, for one; also it really has to have a try-before-buy mode, unlike iOS app store (crippled "lite" versions don't count)

i don't think the iPhone app store is an especially easy place to choose among alternatives for the same task
