It must be amatter of text encoding, but neither Bean, Appleworks

i expect Pages assumes everything is UTF-8, so that would imply your

you can use TextEdit to change encodings (your info is incomplete
though -- are these plain text files?)
You're right in respect to TextEdit.app (I have only seen the settings
for html, and overlooked the open/save settings).
AFAIK, you're also right about Pages.app using UTF-8.
But all of my documents are Appleworks docs, and Appleworks does not
work with UTF-8.
The documents are not old ones, and had been created with and saved as
Applework documents (awwp types), and opening them with Appleworks or
Pages was until recently no problem so far.
Nevertheless, I have now figured out, what created the problem: FONTS.
Just to recall the setting:
I had only Apple fonts installed (no third party fonts) and had thrown
most of the fonts in /Library/fonts away just after installation of
Leo, keeping only Futura, Marker, Copperplate, Arial, Courier New,
Tahoma, Times New Roman and Verdana.
I had checked all fonts with fontbook, result was error free.
I have checked all fonts with Fontdoctor: also no error report.
I had deleted ALL font caches several times.
Checking with a new user reproduced the same error.
Booting with a clean copy of 10.5.8 (which I always have on a
partition) did not reproduce the problem.
I therefore deleted all remaining fonts in /Library/fonts and replaced
them by a clean copy: and the problem is gone.....
The lesson to learn: dont even trust the repair/check/maintenance
utilities, even if they are from Apple...
Tanks anyhow for your valued help
Rudolf
