What if they produced the Mac Mini and the optical drive to be able to fit together nicely? Possibly attaching by taking the place of the circular “port” that is taken off when you upgrade the Mini? It might be difficult to make the case of the drive be able to attach to the Mini like that and still “look nice” if it is just a stand-alone drive, but they could have a set of contacts around the circular port so the electrical connection would be hidden. There would be the rather unsightly “seam” where the mini and the drive meet, but of Apple could presumably slightly beveled the bottom edges of the mini and the top edges of the drive.
